FAQ about the BSMS Program
- Q: Is there a fee for applying to the BSMS program?
A: Application to the BSMS program is free. If your cumulative GPA is at least 3.0 it is to your advantage to apply.
-
Q: When should I apply for the BSMS program?
A: You should apply in your junior year. Note that you don’t necessarily have to take graduate courses in that semester. You can expect that graduate courses are at a more advanced level and to take full advantage and ensure success in the graduate course you should first complete relevant undergraduate courses. The graduate advisor can assist you in deciding which courses you can take.
-
Q: Who is the BSMS advisor?
A: You can reach out to Dr. Siddiqui or Dr. Erdi with questions about the BS/MS program.
-
Q: I haven’t decided what I want to do after I complete my BS. Does the BSMS program require that I start my MS degree immediately after graduation from BS?
A: No. The BSMS does not have any requirements after graduation. You are not obligated to continue with the MS degree or to attend NJIT.
-
Q: Will I have to apply for admission to the MS program after I graduate if I am in the BSMS program?
A: You will not need to apply to the MS program. Once you are admitted to the BSMS program you are also automatically admitted to the MS program as long as you maintain a 3.0 GPA. Consequently, there is also no MS application fee.
-
Q: Will I need to take the GRE exam?
A: No. One advantage to joining the BSMS program is that you will not have to take the GRE exam for the MS program.
-
Q: If I decide to do my MS at another school, will that school accept my BSMS graduate courses?
A: Most likely the other school will NOT accept graduate courses that you complete as an UG student. Typically, those schools consider graduate courses as undergraduate degree requirement only. However, it is still to your advantage to take BSMS courses in case your plans change and you decide to continue at NJIT. You will have already completed at least 20% of your MS degree.
-
Q: How many BSMS courses can I take in total?
A: If your GPA is below 3.5 you can take up to 2 BSMS courses. If your GPA is above 3.5 you can take up to 3 BSMS courses. These courses will count for both BS and MS credit. You can take an additional 3 MS classes for GRADUATE CREDIT ONLY. You will be charged the difference in tuition between BS and MS rates. However, this is a great way to make substantial progress on your MS while still an UG student. It is possible to finish at least 50% of your MS degree by the time you graduate with your UG degree.
-
Q: How do I decide which MS classes to take?
A: You can start by looking at the schedule and seeing which courses fit your schedule and that you are interested in taking. You can also look at the list of pre-approved electives. Since these classes will count as your UG electives, there is no specific requirement as to which courses you must take. You are advised to check the prerequisites (where applicable) and you can discuss your selections with your advisor.
-
Q: I would like to do my MS in another department at NJIT. Is that possible and what is the process?
A: It is certainly possible and the process is the same. However, you should contact the graduate advisor in the other MS program and get their signature on the registration form. The graduate advisor of the new MS program can verify that the MS courses you select will count towards that program. Also, if you take an MS course outside the department you may need a permit, which that advisor will have to issue.
-
Q: What grade do I need to get in the MS course to count?
A: You must receive at least a B or the course will count only for BS credit. The course will not carry over to your MS transcript when you start the MS if you don’t receive at least a B.
-
Q: How many forms do I have to fill out?
A: There is 1 application form and 1 registration form. You must complete the application form only one time. This form admits you to the program and is submitted through admissions: Dual Degree Program (BS/MS, BS/MBA, BArch/MS, BArch/MBA, MS/MS, BS/PhD) Application (njit.edu) The other form is the registration form that you must fill out EACH semester. List the courses that you want to take in that semester on the form. That form is submitted to the registrar and they will then register you into the class. You can find that form here: Approval for BSMS Courses_2020.pdf (njit.edu)
-
Q: I have applied to the BSMS program, but I still can’t register for the course.
A: As an undergraduate student you cannot directly register for a graduate class through the pipeline. You will have to submit the form to the registrar and they will register you into the class: Approval for BSMS Courses_2020.pdf (njit.edu)
-
Q: I have a scholarship. Will the scholarship pay for my graduate courses?
A: The scholarship will pay for courses that are taken as part of the BSMS program only. Once you have completed your 2 (or 3 if your GPA is at least 3.5) courses the scholarship will not pay for additional graduate courses.
-
Q: I have early registration privileges, can I register early?
A: This depends on the course. Some courses that are required courses for MS students or are very popular with MS students may give priority to MS students only during the first week of registration. In that case, all BSMS registrations may be held until after the graduate students have had a chance to register first. Your advisor will let you know when you submit the registration form.
-
Q: I need a permit for a closed graduate course in BME. Can I get a permit?
A: Once the course is full, any closed course permits requests will only be considered MS students.
-
Q: I need a permit for a graduate course in another department. What should I do?
A: You will need to contact the graduate advisor in that department. You can also check the department homepage for specific permit request instructions in that department.
