The Department of Biomedical Engineering collaborates on both research and educational initiatives with a number of world class medical facilities based in the immediate Newark area
|Rutgers University is New Jersey's university of the health sciences and the largest institution of its kind in the nation. Its Newark-based units include schools of medicine, dentistry, biomedical science, nursing, public health, and health-related professions, as well as University Hospital, the state's premier university medical center, and specialized facilites such as the National Tuberculosis Center, the Center for Biodefense, and a cancer center.
The Center for Molecular and Behavioral Neurosciences at Rutgers University combines that campus' strengths in neurobiological and behavioral research to establish a center in which neuroscience can be studied at all levels, from the molecular to the behavioral.
The University Heights Center for Advanced Imaging, operated by Rutgers University, is home to a high-powered (3-Tesla) functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) scanner -- on of only a handful in the nation -- provides detailed pictures of specific areas of brain activity that can significantly advance neurological research. NJIT's Department of Biomedical Engineering has strong research initiatives in neural and vision engineering that work in collaboration with Rutgers University researchers at the center.
The New Jersey Center for Biomaterials is a formal consortium of New Jersey's premier institutions of higher education, dedicated to developing advanced biomedical products for tissue repair and replacement, and the delivery of drugs. The Medical Device Concept Laboratory (MDCL), operated by the center and NJIT's Biomedical Engineering Department, focuses on the development of synthetic materials in biomedicine. MDCL is located in the Council on Higher Education in Newark (CHEN) building in Science Park.
The Center for Applied Genomics (CAG) is an interdisciplinary and multi-institutional alliance among PHRI, the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey - New Jersey Medical School, and NJIT located at PHRI. The center is devoted to research in biology and medicine using functional genomic approaches. A primary focus of the Center is the application and further development of DNA and protein chip technology.
|The Public Health Research Institute (PHRI) is an independent, world-class research organization founded to help eliminate worldwide infectious disease threats through research excellence and leadership in public health support programs. The Institute moved in 2002 to University Heights Science Park, adjacent to NJIT's Newark campus. PHRI's cutting edge infectious disease research includes work with the smallpox vaccine, the identification of cancer-causing oncogenes, and the discovery of the gene for toxic shock syndrome.
University Heights and vicinity is also home to a number of excellent teaching medical centers with strong programs of clinical research. These include the nationally-renowned Kessler Foundation, Rutgers University, St. Michael's Medical Center, the East Orange Veterans Affairs Medical Center, and St. Barnabas Medical Center.
