BME Senior Latest Recipient of the Madame Mau Outstanding Female Engineering Student Endowment Award

BME senior, Jumanah Yasmin, is the latest recipient of the prestigous Madame Mau Outstanding Female Engineering Student Endowment Award. The award recognizes a female student working toward a degree in one of Newark College of Engineering's disciplines, who excels in academics and leadership.  Jumanah was also honored with the NCE Outstanding Departmental Senior Award (for BME).  The awards were presented at the 2009 Salute to Engineering Excellence Event, held March 26, 2009 at the NJIT Campus.

ACEC Names Pfister Educator of the Year

The American Council of Engineering Companies of New Jersey (ACEC) honored Bryan J. Pfister, PhD with the 2008 Educator of the Year Award.  The award was presented at the 38th Annual Engineering Excellence Awards ceremony held March 19, 2009 at Rutgers University, New Jersey. 

Van Buskirk Honored as Mentor

Dr. William C. Van Buskirk, distinguished professor in Biomedical Engineering, was recently honored at the “Thank You Research” Gala sponsored by the New Jersey Association for Biomedical Research.  The title of this year’s gala which was held on Thursday, October 26, 2006 was “The Art of the Mentor.”  Dr. Van Buskirk was honored for his work as a mentor to Dr. Richard T. Hart, currently chair of the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Ohio State University.

Dr. Hart states that Dr. Van Buskirk’s influence was instrumental in his taking on his current role as Department Chair.  “He was an advocate for the department, faculty and students—collectively as well as individuals—one who tried to institutionalize collaboration rather than competition.  He was always optimistic, always focusing on the possibilities.”  Dr. Van Buskirk himself believes that one cannot be an effective leader in academia without being a mentor…”You must be interested in the success of others to be successful yourself,” says Dr. Van Buskirk.  He goes on to say: “I went into academia because I loved teaching and I found in mentoring yet another way to teach.  To my mind, one of the privileges and obligations of success is to be a mentor.”

Senior Receives Outstanding Student award

Jason Vieira was honored with the 2005 Outstanding Senior Award from the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the Seventh Annual Newark College of Engineering Awards Banquet held in April at the Newark Liberty International Airport Marriot. At left, Jason received congratulations from Dr. William Hunter, professor and chair of Biomedical Engineering, and Dr. Ron Rockland, associate dean of NCE.
