About Dr. Haorah

James Haorah, PhD, associate professor of biomedical engineering, is a 2008 recipient of New Investigator Distinguished Scientist Award at University of Nebraska Medical Center and recipient of 1995 National Overseas Postdoctoral Scholarship Award from the government of India. His research interests focus in understanding the underlying molecular, biochemical, and cellular mechanisms of oxidative injury of the neurovascular components (brain endothelial cells – the blood-brain barrier, pericytes, astrocytes, microglia, and neurons). His main focus is to examine the alterations of the neurovascular components during chronic substance use such as alcohol or drug abuse, blast-wave mild traumatic injury, and neuro-AIDS progression. Our hypothesis is that oxidative damage of the BBB interface facilitates immune cell infiltration, neuroinflammation and neurological diseases. This neuropathologic progression impairs the transport of essential nutrients into the brain that interrupts the energetic communication of neuro-glial cells, thereby causing an imbalanced mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation. The co-morbid effect of alcohol use and drug abuse promotes HIV infection, energy depletion and malnutrition, and hinders the efficacy of antiretroviral therapy (ART) in controlling HIV/AIDS progression. We also examine the idea that suppression of oxidative stress, neutralization of ART toxicity, and restoration of malnutrition and immune function by dietary supplements can be a gold-standard treatment for HIV/AIDS progression in subjects with substance use. These novel research ideas are carried with active funding from National Health Institute.

Our research objective examines the underlying molecular, biochemical, and cellular mechanisms of damage to blood-brain barrier and neurovascular units during substance abuse, blast-wave brain injury or HIV infection.
