Title:
Computational Biology Research at the U.S. Army Medical Command

Abstract:
This talk will provide an overview of ongoing, inter-disciplinary research efforts in computational biology at the DoD Biotechnology High Performance Computing Software Applications Institute at Fort Detrick, Maryland, to address military medical problems.  I will provide a number of vignettes of projects involving 1) artificial intelligence algorithms that can learn and adapt to an individual’s physiological response on their own, allowing for the development of individualized predictive mathematical models; 2) integration of fitness-tracking devices with individualized predictive models to help reduce the incidence of heat injuries and optimize cognitive performance; 3) decision-support algorithms for automatic identification of trauma patients with life-threatening conditions before arrival at a hospital; and 4) 3-D mathematical models for computing the spatiotemporal physiological response to exertional and environmental heat stressors.
