Research Areas

Teams of 2-3 REU students will work together in the development of a research project. Each year one research project will be offered for each of the four research areas described below.
MATERIALS FOR TISSUE ENGINEERING

Projects will focus on the processing and characterization of materials used in neural engineering applications.

Faculty mentors: Dr. Arinzeh, Dr. Jaffe, Dr. Collins, and Dr. Pfister.

NEUROFUNCTIONAL AND NEUROBEHAVIOR ANALYSIS

Projects will be based on using established laboratory analysis techniques of functional and behavioral assessments in animal models.

Faculty mentors: Dr. Servatius, Dr. Pang, Dr. Berlin, and Dr. Santhakumar.

MULTICELLULAR NEURAL TISSUE ENGINEERING

BioMEMS and micro-patterned culture techniques will be used to control the microenviroment in cellular studies. 

Faculty mentors: Dr. Cho, Dr. Lee, Dr. Ivanov, and Dr. Perez-Castillejos.

NEUROMUSCULAR CONTROL

Projects will include using software control, robotic technology, modeling and/or instrumentation to study human motion and muscular control.

Faculty mentors: Dr. Alvarez, Dr. Sahin, Dr. Foulds, and Dr. Adamovich.
