Biography

William C. Van Buskirk, Ph.D., P.E. is a Distinguished Professor of Biomedical Engineering.  He served as Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs from October 1998 to April 2004. He received his B.S. from the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York, and his M.S. and Ph.D. in Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering from Stanford University. Dr. Van Buskirk holds the rank of Distinguished Professor and is the Foundation Professor of Biomechanical Engineering.  Prior to coming to NJIT, Dr. Van Buskirk held the position of Alden J. Laborde Professor and Dean of the School of Engineering at Tulane University.

Among the honors he has received is being named Dow Outstanding Young Faculty member by the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) in 1974. In 1981, he received the Tulane School of Engineering's Excellence in Teaching Award. In 1986, the ASEE awarded him its Outstanding Biomedical Engineering Educator Award. He is a Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, of the American Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering, and of the Biomedical Engineering Society. His research interests are in the field of biomechanics and he has made significant contributions to the fields of vestibular mechanics and bone mechanics.
